September 2:  We will finish up our discussion of the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment and how they created the Philosophical Foundations for the French Revolution.   Papers are also due on Thursday the 7th.

September 4  We will begin to analyze "The Age of Revolution," i.e. the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. In today's class we will examine the French Revolution through the end of the Moderate Phase and the rise of the Jacobins.

For the 9th and 11th:

• Read:

  • Maximilien Robespierre: The Cult of the Supreme Being - Short speech made by Robespierre outlining how the Radicals viewed religion.

  • "Republic of Virtue" Robespierre's justification for the use of terror.

  • Notes on the Radical Phase of the Revolution -PDF
    • Good Summary of the Revolution - excellent as a reference source - I recommend printing this and keeping it.
